The Ryzen 7 7700X isn’t quite as fast as its 16-core siblings at 5.9GHz, but it still manages a pretty remarkable all-core frequency of 5.15GHz right out of the box. Just a few months ago, these rates would have required significant overclocking, but now we’re obtaining them in AMD CPUs with stock clock speeds. One of the first AMD Zen 4 processors to be released, the eight-core, 16-thread AMD Ryzen 7 7700X supports PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 RAM and uses Team Red’s next-generation 5nm design. The latter two characteristics align AMD with Intel, which unveiled its initial Alder Lake portfolio in November 2021, and bring AMD up to speed. The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, which featured eight cores and 16 threads with a base speed of 3.80 GHz and a boost clock of 4.70 GHz, was the closest antecedent to the Ryzen 7 5700X because it didn’t exist. Setup

On an Asrock X670E Taichi motherboard with a 2x16GB G.Skill DDR5 memory kit working at 5,200MHz, we put the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X through its paces. A Cooler Master MasterLiquid PL240 Flux 240mm water cooler is what we choose to use. The system was mounted on a Praxis WetBench open-air test bench and powered by a SilverStone DA850 power supply. Except for the tests expressly designed to assess the Radeon integrated graphics processor, all testing were performed using an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition graphics card. All of the Intel processors compared to the Ryzen 7 7700X were evaluated in a largely comparable open-air testbed with the same cooler, power supply, and RAM. The only significant modification was that the RAM was set at 4,800 MHz for Intel systems because that is the highest RAM speed that is officially supported by Intel and is not technically memory overclocking.

AMD Ryzen 7 7700X review: Performance

The AMD Ryzen 7 7700X outperforms every Ryzen 5000-series processor that came before it, and when performance is averaged across all benchmarks, it essentially matches the Ryzen 9 5950X. The Ryzen 7 7700X dominates nearly every other processor we’ve tested that isn’t the Core i9-12900K or the Ryzen 9 7950X, whether it be in terms of raw single-core or multi-core performance, real-world use, content production, or gaming performance. The Core i9-12900K, the best CPU available until the Ryzen 9 7950X appeared on the scene, or the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, the finest gaming processor available until the Ryzen 7 7700X grabbed the lead, may perform worse on specific benchmarks (for now). This also applies to the Ryzen 9 7950X, which, on average, performed somewhat worse than the Ryzen 7 7700X in our testing. This may change once we evaluate the Ryzen 9 7900X, but with an MSRP $50 less than the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, this is unquestionably the processor to take into account when shopping for a new gaming CPU. In terms of pure multi-core performance, the 7700X is only genuinely defeated by the i9-12900K, which was a battle an eight-core, 16-thread processor could never win against a 16-core/24-thread chip in a single generation.
