User environment
Canva and Crello seem like twins when it comes to their user interface. Right from the home page to the edit screen, their design appears similar with minor differences. You can find a number of design templates on the Canva homepage, followed by the designs you have created. By clicking on ‘Design a design’ button reveals all templates.
In Crello, all templates are available directly on the home page. Your previously designed images are available in My Projects, accessible from the left. While on the one hand it separates new and old photos in a better way, it is generally a two step process.
When you select a template, you open both of them in a new window. Again, the interface is remarkably similar. On the left you have several features such as templates, text, background, folders and more. You will find the download options at the top right.

Save automatically
Although some may like this feature, others will hate it. That’s because Canva automatically saves any templates that you change under your designs. You can also change these in the future. Even if you make a small change, it will be saved. Things are different for Crello, where you have to click Save buttonOnly then can you view them in your projects. You must now have guessed that login is necessary to use both tools.
Design templates and animation
Canva has a template for everything. Whether it’s a birthday card, poster, letterhead, resume, yearbook, logo, etc., Canva won’t disappoint. While Crello offers several templates as well, it doesn’t come close to Canva. Fortunately, both offer custom dimensions and search feature that makes it easy to find the template you want.
When it comes to animated images, Canva has kept them limited to the premium version. While you can create a square video post for free with Crello, it doesn’t offer animations. You will have to use your video or animation.
Photos and elements
Photos play an important role in a graphic design tool. While both offer the option to upload images, Canva offers an extensive collection of photos – both free and paid. Crello misses another backlog.
What I liked about Crello, however, is that it distinguishes between free and paid photos. First, there’s a separate category with free photos, and if you use the search, you’ll find the free photos at the top followed by paid items. That’s not the case with Canva, where the items are mixed.
In addition to photos, elements also determine your image. Both offer a wide variety of elements, but Canva is once again leading the race. It provides special elements such as charts, gradients, and more, in addition to shapes, icons, frames, etc. Both provide containers known as masks (Crello) and frames (canvas) for cropping images into shapes. Collaborate with others
Crello is designed for one user and you cannot collaborate with others. Canva, on the other hand, is gracious enough to the feature also in the free version. Of course there are certain limitations compared to the premium account such as the number of users.
Connect apps
Whatever you see on the screen, those are the only things Crello has to offer. In the case of Canva, you can extend its capabilities with Canva apps. These include free photos from sites such as Pexels and Pixabay, emojis, Instagram, and more.
My files
As we already know, you can upload your photos with both. Crello takes it a step further and also lets you add your own fonts in the free version. You can even create multiple folders to organize your images. The feature is missing from Canva. Plus, I like how Crello keeps all your files in one place, where you can find photos, fonts, purchased items, and favorites.
Add multiple pages
Canva comes with a unique feature where you can create multi-page images. You can also create documents, brochures, etc.
Resize canvas
Often times I need the same image for multiple media, such as stories, posts, etc. Unfortunately, you have to start over in the case of Canva when using the free version. But thanks to Crello, it offers the option of resizing in the free version. Not only that, you can resize to multiple dimensions with just one click.
Save options
Both offer options for saving JPG, PNG and PDF. That’s enough for use on social media. However, sometimes we need the image with a transparent background, especially when creating a logo or similar images. In that case, Canva disappoints a bit when the feature is limited to the premium version. But guess what? Crello allows you to save images with transparent backgrounds in the free version.
