Guide: Create Your Own Radio Station using Spreaker

Vlogs and podcasts are gaining momentum, just as blogs were in the past. Businesses and freelancers in all industries can use some form of this to communicate with their audience. With every medium gaining in popularity, a service like Spreaker gives users the chance to create their own radio station (or podcast) quickly and easily – and for free. Here’s a look at how good Spreaker works and what it is capable of.

User environment

I love Spreaker’s couple. The color scheme is not complicated: a black header and footer, with gray, white and some green accents. There are orange accents highlighting what to look out for, and of course my eye is drawn to this bright and louder color. I approve. It is quite easy for a new user to navigate Spreaker. Spreaker has implemented the profile percentage I first saw on LinkedIn, where new users do certain things (eg fill out their profile, connect to Facebook, etc…) to reach 100% completion. It’s a great way to end guide new users through the process and it is very easy.

Radio programs are divided into nine different categories for easy browsing. One quirky thing: The Popular tab sorts the shows seemingly randomly (i.e. the first result had 46 listens, but the second had 64 and the third had 17).

While flipping through some people’s shows, I heard quite a long intro music segment that I wasn’t that big of a fan of. However, I wanted to hear what the show was about which meant putting up with the music. I would like these segments to be skippable, and I think that’s a navigation bar or fast forward button can solve this problem. On the other hand, the problem is that some listeners will not tune in live and thus may miss the opportunity to communicate more closely with the radio DJs.

To broadcast

It took almost twenty minutes to upload two files. I was a bit surprised: with 7mb and 20mb, I didn’t expect uploading and processing to take so long. I notice that as a user I wanted to get started with my music the most nowThis is the advantage of using offline DJ software, as it allows you to access your music files faster and switch more easily. For example, if I didn’t like the combination of the two songs, I would have to upload another file again, which with Spreaker can take another ten minutes. In comparison, VirtualDJ takes a few seconds to analyze the song and it is ready to go. So just like a cup up, DJs please hope not to use Spreaker to replace VirtualDJ.

Once the files are uploaded, it is quite easy to find them in your library and add them to your playlist, then transfer them to your cover Spreaker’s features include record your own voice throwing sound effects, and play two files simultaneously while adjusting the volumeThis one features are quite useful for recording radio shows, and that’s what Spreaker is aiming for. These features are enough to justify using Spreaker for a quick podcast you want to create and do some mild edits and tweaks afterward.

You can also choose to broadcast live from your console, which is pretty cool featureI love the inclusion of the On Air button, it’s such small details that make me look like Spreaker. Broadcasting live is an exciting part of Spreaker and is probably the main reason I would use it. The ability to interact with listeners live and get near-instant feedback is great, and just makes everything so much more engaging and interactive. MP3s may need to be scheduled in advance (due to the ten minute upload), but I was listening to Nate Dogg’s Region Codes in decent quality, which I can’t say for other live streaming services (like Ustream and the like, which are more video focused).

Social network

Spreaker’s community is currently small. I have no problem with small communities: sometimes I like them even more for their intimacy and closeness to their members. That said, I didn’t really like that much with Spreaker at the time. Navigating through some of their popular shows leads me to some Mexican channels (which play some cool music by the way) and some shows titled My first radio showThe number of followers was low and there was not much chat activity. That said, I expect the situation to improve as Spreaker gains momentum, and I’m optimistic that the community will grow closer together.

Spreaker greatly promotes connectivity with Facebook: by default, your shows are broadcast as a status on Facebook. If you refer five members to the site, you can get a month of Premium Spreaker free. This means more airtime and storage for you! I like Spreaker’s efforts to connect with their users through blog, where they share music advice for new users. I think it is important to keep helping users develop their shows.

The young speaker

I think Spreaker has a lot of good features. I think it has a decent framework for new users to get started with, and the interface is clean and aesthetically pleasing. I also think it features are pretty solid (in hindsight, I probably wouldn’t have expected sync capabilities – I think I was too optimistic), and I like the ability to broadcast live. As I heard from a radio station, they found the ability to communicate with their users via chat or Twitter live, which I think is a big part of Spreaker. That said, Spreaker has a lot of room for more community members and more interesting ways to categorize shows. It’s also a bit lacking in terms of audience control: I’d like to be able to fast forward and skip certain parts of shows, and I think little details like this Spreaker can distinguish from normal radio stations (broadcast radio stations also don’t allow listeners to skip their transitions ). Give Spreaker a try, it’s fun to use, shows a lot of potential, and it’s free.
