A new zero-day vulnerability has been discovered in Windows that allows attackers to exploit Microsoft’s operating system and quickly gain administrative privileges on a device. The vulnerability affects Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows Server. The bug allows attackers with restricted access to gain more privileges and spread through the system to allow even more any kind of potential damage. Microsoft limits the attack to two exploits in the Adobe Type Manager Library that attackers exploit. The sad part, however, is that Microsoft will release the security patch next month, probably on April 14, 2020. Microsoft said that this happens when “the Windows Adobe Type Manager Library fails to properly load a multimaster font especially created – Adobe PostScript Type 1 Format processed”. To summarize, when you download a font file, the font will appear in the thumbnail or preview window. And this is where the remote code execution happens. Microsoft also suggests that exploration might not be limited to just font files (OTF/TTF), but might be extended to specially crafted documents. Microsoft states that “there are several ways an attacker could exploit the vulnerability, for example, B. tricking a user into opening a specially crafted document or viewing it in the Windows preview window”.
