If Gmail is the king of emails then Dropbox is the king of cloud storage. Yes, I know what you are thinking. But what about Google Drive and OneDrive? How about iCloud? Well, for good reason, Steve Jobs wanted to buy Dropbox before Drew Houston politely declined. Even with a meager 2 GB of free storage, Dropbox remains a favorite of developers and users alike. Personally, I prefer Dropbox over Google Drive for storing, opening and sharing important documents and what not. It just works right out of the box, every time, while Google Drive still has sync issues from time to time. So it’s only natural that you want to access and use Dropbox from Gmail to get the most out of the two tools. You can then easily download and save important email attachments directly to Dropbox or add links to large files before sending email to your supplier. Imagine all the time and bandwidth you could save using this solution. This will really make life easier for many people who use Gmail and Dropbox on a daily basis. There are two ways to achieve this and we will discuss both. Let’s start.
1. Dropbox for Gmail Chrome extension
Dropbox for Gmail is a Chrome extension that you can easily install in your browser. Go to the Chrome store and click the Add to Chrome button and confirm when prompted. You will see a new icon next to the address bar.
Clicking the new Dropbox icon will instantly launch Gmail in a new tab. Now open Gmail and click Compose to create a new email. You will see a gray Dropbox icon next to Send buttonClick on it to log in.
A new pop-up with a login option. You can also create a new Dropbox account here if you don’t have one yet. I use my Google (Gmail) account to log in to Dropbox as it makes managing everything much easier. I’m taking a moment here and would recommend that you enable 2FA in your Dropbox / Google account to make it more secure.
After logging in, you will be greeted by a new popupup with all the folders you have created in Dropbox. You can easily select any file from Dropbox here while composing a new email in Gmail.
A handy search function is available at the top so that you can search by name for the files to attach. Note that when you share a file with the Dropbox for Gmail Chrome extension, you are not uploading or attaching the file itself, but a shareable link to the file. This reduces bandwidth and time and helps you send emails faster and more securely.
Follow the same procedure to save attachments from Gmail to Dropbox. Open the email and move your mouse over the attachment. You will see Dropbox there along with the Google Drive option. Click on the Dropbox button to popup and choose the file location to save the attachment directly to the cloud.

2. Dropbox for Gmail Addon
The solution above works fine for people using Chrome, but what about the Gmail app for Android? What about those who use Firefox or Safari or those who work with a team? Dropbox also offers business solutions where more than one person can access the account. What’s with them? To combat these common problems, you can use Dropbox for Gmail addonThis integrates Dropbox directly into the Gmail app, making it accessible from anywhere. Open Gmail in any browser you want and click on the gear icon below which you will find the Download add-ons option.
This will open the G Suite Marketplace. Here you will find add-ons for a number of popular services. Use the search bar to find the Dropbox for Gmail addon
Click on the addon once to open the description section and click the blue Install button top right.
Click Confirm when prompted and log into your Dropbox account in the next window. Gmail asks for various permissions to access your Dropbox account. Click Allow at the bottom of this and continue. You will now see the message Installation complete. Let’s see how it works. Open an email with an attachment in a browser and you will see the Dropbox icon on the right. You will be asked to sign in to allow Gmail to access files stored on the Dropbox servers. You only need to do it once to grant the necessary permissions.
Now when you receive an email with an attachment, click the Dropbox icon to save it directly to the cloud.
If you open the same email in your Gmail app on Android, you will see the Dropbox option at the bottom of the screen. Click it once to save the attachment directly to Dropbox.
Dropbox for Gmail addon works in all browsers and operating systems including Android and iOS as it is integrated directly into Gmail. This is a much better solution in my opinion compared to the Chrome extension.

There are two ways to access and use Dropbox from Gmail, and both work right out of the box. There is no learning curve as long as you follow the steps above. You no longer have to worry about being unable to share large files due to email attachment restrictions. Gmail and most other email service providers have a maximum attachment size of 25MB, which isn’t too much these days. You need better and smarter solutions.
