How to ask iPhone and iPad Apps not to Track Around the Web – Guide

All apps now need to detail what they track in the App Store (in a section called App Privacy). If they haven’t already submitted details for this, they will be prompted to do so when they submit the next app update to Apple. The new requirement has fueled the ire of some, notably Facebook, who rely on tracking to target ads. Your Apple device tracks what you do in apps using an anodized identifier – that means Facebook can show you ads for the item you just searched for on eBay. Google has a similar thing called Google Advertising ID. These essentially link your activities in such a way that you cannot be personally identified. They make ads more effective for advertisers, but they should – in theory – also make them more relevant to you. Facebook argues that tracking offers a “better advertising experience” but has already warned investors that Apple’s move could harm its advertising business. Apps cannot circumvent App Store rules that require you to request this permission and restrict the app’s functionality depending on whether you’ve granted permission to track. Likewise, they cannot share other information, such as an email address or username, with others. After iOS 15 update, the new setting will be enabled by default, so you don’t need to do anything. But you can adjust it to suit you. With this setup, any new app you install will have to ask for permission to track it on other apps and websites. As a result, if you download a new app, you will see a message asking you to choose ‘Allow app not to track’ or ‘Allow’.

How to stop apps that ask you to allow tracking

In fact, you don’t need to see these requests from apps that want to track you. You can stop them in their tracks just by turning the slider next to Allow apps to request tracking to gray.
