How to Free Up Storage on Apple Watch – Guide

Unlike your iPhone or iPad, the Apple Watch doesn’t have a lot of space for apps, music, podcasts, and all the other content you might try to store on it. The amount of storage varies by watch version. The Series 6, 5 and SE offer 32GB of space, but only 16GB on the Series 4, 16GB for the Series 3 GPS + Cellular model, and only 8GB for the Series 3 GPS model. Depending on your watch and the amount of content downloaded or synced, you could easily run out of space before you know it. But your watch can tell you how much space you have available. It can also show you how much space is used by specific apps and content so you know what to do when it’s running for free.

How much space?

Today’s iPhones have up to 512GB of storage space. Apple Watch, not so much. The Apple Watch Series 5 has a capacity of 32GB in comparison. Earlier models only had 8GB. Two types of files largely influence storage space on Apple Watch: music and photos, with apps mostly up the rest. For the first two, we are talking about files added to Watch for offline use. To find out how much space your Apple Watch is using and how: You can see how much storage space is being used on your Apple Watch sorted by the app on this screen.

removing space

Since the Apple Watch’s storage capacity is mostly limited to music and photos, it doesn’t make sense to delete apps on the wearable just to save space. The apps themselves do not accept up lots of space. So instead, let’s focus on the music and photos.

Music

Downloading music to Apple Watch lets you enjoy your favorite music and artists without having your iPhone around. It’s a great perk, especially if you don’t have an Apple Watch Wi-Fi + Cellular. To view music stored on Apple Watch: You will find a list of albums and playlists currently installed on Apple Watch on this page. You will also see Apple Music mixes where applicable. You can enable/disable mixes and click the red “+” to the left of downloaded playlists and albums to remove the content.

Photos

To adjust the images stored on the Apple Watch, you need to once again turn to the Watch app on your iPhone. You can sync a photo album on Apple Watch. So naturally, the bigger the collection, the more storage is being used on the Apple Watch. The Photo Limit options are 25, 100, 250, or 500 photos.

apps

You can delete apps on Apple Watch on the real device or using your iPhone. The latter is a more straightforward process, but we’ll introduce both options here. On iPhone: The above app is no longer installed on your wearable device. On Apple Watch:

There are two other places on the Apple Watch to remove precious storage space: Podcasts and Audiobooks. Introduced in watchOS 5 and watchOS 6 respectively, both apps can contain large files depending on your configuration. To review Podcasts settings: When applicable, Apple Watch will add three unplayed episodes of each podcast selected on this screen. The information is pulled from the Podcasts app on the iPhone. Disable to remove unplayed podcasts from Apple Watch. Audiobooks on Apple Watch work in a similar way:
