Guide: How to Search Music in Apple Music
Apple Music is the most feature rich music streaming service now available. It’s the sum of all the other services out there plus more. There are 30 million songs, plus human curated playlists, live and genre based stations and I can go on and on. But before you get scared, I want to tell you this. Apple Music is worth it. Apple Music is worth messing around for a few minutes, and it’s worth $ 9.99 once the three-month trial ends. Because no one else gives you anything that much music, and herein awesome package. Apple has made caring for music easy again. All this variety and features plus its accessibility makes Apple Music a great tool for discovering new music you really like. From a classic rock band you’ve always wanted to get into, to the hip new music everyone will be talking about this weekend. Apple Music has it all and this is it how to do you understand. Apple Music for Newbies: We have already written a beginners guide to Apple Music and a how-to guide for using the new music app in iOS 8.4. This article assumes that you are already familiar with Apple Music. If you’re not, check out our in-depth Apple Music walkthrough.
1. Use the introduction to playlists
If you’ve ever wanted to listen to an artist who keeps introducing a friend or a classic rock / pop band (except, of course, The Beatles), Apple Music will help. All you need to do is search for an artist, make sure the Apple Music section is selected and scroll down to the Playlists section. Speaking of a big band name, you’ll find custom playlists curated by Apple’s music editors – the people who really know what they’re talking about.
And my favorite playlists are “Intro to X”. I checked a few, especially for the artists I already know, to make sure they were good. And I was not disappointed. The Introduction to Bob Dylan Playlist (Sidenote: Yes, you can share links to Apple Music playlists. tip for sharing music recommendations with your friends) has 25 songs, and if I were to recommend songs to a Dylan newbie, my list would be pretty much the same (though I’d rank Highway 61 much higher). But there are many more types of playlists. Continuing on the example of Bob Dylan, I found a playlist about Dylan’s acoustic years and for a man who pretty much finished his electric guitar, this playlist was a bit of a surprise.
2. Tune in to Beats 1 and forget everything else
I’ll be honest, I was not sold on the idea of a live 24/7 station broadcast to over 100 countries simultaneously. But boy did Apple get it done. The hosts are great, there are no sloppy ads, the interviews are entertaining, and the music is really good! I’m not the kind of person who’s always looking for hip new music and Beats 1 isn’t going to change that. But what I like is that I can just tap 1 button and I am greeted with music that I will probably enjoy listening too. It doesn’t matter if it’s hip hop, electronic, country or something else. As long as the music is good, I’m sold.
If you just listen to Beats 1 you will find a lot of music that you really like and adding the song to your collection only takes 2 taps (three point menu button -> Add to My Music). Likewise, there are other “classic”, non-live streaming radio stations. Do you like Alto / indie music? Listen to the mixtape. There are similar stations for country music, electronic and even jazz. You can skip songs here, add songs to your collection, and more.
If you’re not sure what exactly you want to listen to, but have a genre in mind, this is the best place to start.
3. Follow, love, add and continue to refresh for you
Apple Music always looks, of course, in a totally non-creepy way. Even after telling the app what genres and artists you like, the app keeps track of what you’re looking for, what music you like (by tapping on it heart icon), and which music you choose to add to your library.
So keep doing those things to get better suggestions. Remember, the more you discover, the better Apple Music gets. And all those suggestions will turn out up in the For You section, so don’t forget to refresh it every now and then. Try Connect: Connect is where you will find updates from artists, genres and magazines you follow. Plus artists will post exclusive content there.
4. Use the new tab to keep up to date with the world
If you are the kind of person needs to have heard the latest single from Pharrell or Ed Sheeran this is the place for you. But it is more than that. You can sort by genres and Apple will show you the best songs and albums along with what’s trending that week.
5. Playlists by magazines and for certain activities
From the New tab, tap Curators and you’ll see a list of influential music magazines and blogs around the world. Suppose you want to find out the hottest songs people Shazame, or what new playlist Rolling Stones made, this is where to go.
Like Spotify, Apple Music also has curated playlists for any kind of activity. From working to relaxing to sports. Just choose the Activities option, select a playlist and you’re done.
