I was in college when Facebook launched in 2006, and one of my nieces and nephews had sent me an invitation to join. Soon after, the social media platform became my de facto app for storing my photos and videos. Even if my laptop crashed, I was pretty cool with the whole scenario because Facebook had all my read-out memories safely stored. Yes, I was using Facebook as a cloud storage, and I was able to spam my friends’ timelines reasonably well. Fast forward a few years, and Facebook almost became synonymous with scandals and data privacy issues. Whether it’s the Cambridge Analytica data scandal or the more recent password breaches, all of these have left a scar on Facebook’s image. Plus the fact that Facebook knows more about me than my husband, and it clearly wasn’t a reassuring fact. And so it was only natural that I (like millions of others) look for a way out. While the process is quite simple, the thoughts of all those photos and videos kept me from taking any action. Why? Well, you see, I didn’t go back up of all those Facebook photos and videos. When I searched for a solution on the internet, I finally came up with a brilliant solution last month. How to Download Facebook photos
That is the first stage of the process. You can have it on your PC or your mobileHowever, it will be easier to do it on your PC. Step 1: Open Facebook and click on the little arrow icon in the top right corner and click on the Settings icon.
Step 2: Click the Your Facebook Information link in the left pane. Once it opens, click on View next to the Download your information option.
Step 3: This will open the Download Your Information page, from where you can download a copy of your old status, shared posts, comments, and more.
Select Photos & Videos to download your photos. Step 4: Next comes the date range. While in my case I went with All my data, you can also go for a specific date range.
Step 5: Select the download format at the same time. HTML is a good option for all of us as the files are easy to understand.
Step 6: As for the quality, there is no doubt that the media quality has to be high. However, don’t have high hopes for the photos as the photos are compressed to some extent.
Step 7: When you’ve chosen everything, click Create file buttonDepending on the data you have chosen to download, this can take from a few minutes to a few hours.
In my case, it took about half an hour for a 257MB file to be ready. The good news is that you don’t have to keep checking and rechecking download options. Once the file is ready, Facebook will automatically notify you the same. Keep in mind that the download is only available for a few days. If you don’t download it within that period, you will have to run the process again. Step 8: Once the file is ready, click Download and enter your Facebook password again, and that’s it. The first part of the download process is complete. Note: I noticed that Chrome’s Dashlane extension had no trouble entering the Facebook password here. That means if someone has unauthorized access to your browser, downloading all this information and media content becomes child’s play. All your photos and videos are downloaded to a compressed folder. The good news is that all content is arranged in an ordered way according to the album names. In addition, there is a file called Index that shows you a list of all your Facebook photos.
How to Transfer photos to Google Photos
Now that the photos have been downloaded by their album name, it’s time to upload them to Google Photos. If you get the Back-up and sync app, you can do so from the link below. Download Backupup and synchronization Step 1: Once downloaded and installed, sign in with your Google account. After that, open the system tray and right click on the Backup iconup and synchronization.
Then select Preferences to open the main window. Step 2: Now select the folder you are backing upup want to make. To do this, click on Choose folder. At the same time, select the photo quality for upload.
When you’re done, hit OK button to start the download. The whole process will run in the background and will not disturb your work. You can view the progress from the system tray. That is not necessarily a step in the process. However, if you are concerned about the impact on startup, you may want to disable the system startup settings in Settings.
Depending on the size of the photo folder, it will take some time to upload.
Have all photos been downloaded
If you open the Photos tab of your Facebook account, chances are you will see a sea of photos staring at you. From timeline photos and tagged photos to albums, it has plenty. So one click on Download your information button do you get all these pictures?
Unfortunately not. With Facebook, you can only download those photos that you have exclusively uploaded. That means tagged and shared photos or contributed albums will not make it to your downloaded list. The reason for this is that they are not technically yours. The only option left is to ask the person to give you your share of the photos if they’ve uploaded your photos in bulk. Or you can download the images manually. Open the photo in question and click Options> Download.
Move these photos to the Backup folderup and sync, and Google Backupup and synchronization takes care of the rest.
Are there any restrictions
This method has its limitations. First, these photos have no EXIF data. The uploaded date is displayed as the date the photo was taken.
Second, don’t expect to see the premium quality in the downloaded photos. They are heavily compressed and scaled down. So a photo with an original resolution of 3264 x 2448 was reduced to 1140 x 1072. So you can consider these two things before making the transfer. I didn’t care about the first issue as I relied on Google Photos’ facial recognition capabilities to do its magic (and it did). All I had to do was open Google Photos on my phone, go to Albums, and then tap People & Pets.
Then I selected the face thumbnail and voila; all pictures with hair will be lined up instantaneous.
Revisit old memories
That little exercise was a great way to bring back some good old memories. The good thing is that now you don’t have to open Facebook to see them again.
