How to Turn your Keyboard Lighting On and Off – Guide
There isn’t just one way to turn on the keyboard lights. It varies a lot between laptop and peripheral manufacturers, as well as between different lines of the same brand laptops. To help clarify the situation, we’ve compiled a list of six different ways to turn the keyboard backlight on or off. Read on to find out the best way to use your laptop or desktop keyboard.
Press the dedicated button for keyboard backlight
Some keyboards, such as the Logitech G Pro desktop keyboard, will actually have a dedicated keyboard button that you can press to turn the keyboard light on or off. In the case of the Logitech G Pro, you’ll want to look for a button stamped with a sun ray icon in the upper right corner of the keyboard. Any laptops it also has a dedicated backlight key, although the icon can vary greatly.
Press to increase brightness button
If you have a MacBook, some models allow you to turn on the backlight by pressing the Increase Brightness key, which looks like half the sun with three rays. Press it until you get the desired keyboard light brightness level. To turn it off, press the Lower Brightness key, which looks like a semicircle outlined in dots (instead of rays) until the light goes out. Using brightness increase/decrease buttons should work for certain models of Macs running MacOS High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, or Monterey.
Press assigned function key
For many Windows laptops, you may need to press a function key (F1-F12) to turn on the keyboard backlight. If that’s the case, the function key will likely depend on the make and model of your laptop. For example, Dell notebooks have at least three possible key choices: F6, F10, or the right arrow key. In some cases, F5 is also possible. From these options, you should be able to tell which one controls the backlight by seeing which one has the lighting icon (which looks like a half-sun with rays) stamped on it. If you don’t see this icon at all, your Dell PC does not have keyboard backlighting. But if you see the icon, press the function key that contains it. (You may need to press it in conjunction with the Fn key.) Press this key combination – Fn + [Function Key] – should allow you to cycle through the various brightness level options for your Dell PC keyboard, so keep pressing it until you reach the desired brightness level or until you turn it off.
Adjust it in Control Center or Windows Mobility Center
Depending on the manufacturer and model of your device, you can turn on / adjust the keyboard light via the PC control panel menu. For certain MacBooks, this means opening the Control Center, selecting Keyboard brightness, and dragging the corresponding slider. This should work for some MacBook models that also run MacOS Monterey or Big Sur.
Enable keyboard backlight in BIOS
In some cases, if your laptop have the right keyboard light buttons and they still don’t work the way they should, you may need to check your device’s BIOS settings and make sure they’re configured correctly, or your BIOS may need to be updated to the latest version. When doing any of these things, be sure to follow the device manufacturer’s instructions at how to do this carefully. To look up those specific instructions first. Some manufacturers like HP or Dell have posted detailed instructions online at how to check these problems and/or fix them.
