Guide: How to Zoom in Photos/Videos on Chrome Browser

Are you a photo holic or do you just love looking at cute cat images online? Imgur and Reddit are two places on the web to satisfy your daily appetite for cute images. But while using these websites, have you ever felt like you’re spending some extra time somewhere? NO? I’ll tell you. To view images in magnified form, you actually have to click on the image and go to a new page. Yes, it can take as little as half a second or more than a second depending on your network speed. But it is still a waste of time loading a new page to view images in full view. So today I’m going to show you a way to cut down on this extra work and save some time while browsing such websites. ZOOM IN | Shutterstock I’m going to show you a Chrome extension that enlarges images by hovering your cursor over them. And not just images, but videos too. So let’s get into it without further ado.

Move Zoom Plus

The extension we will be using is called Hover Zoom +. It enlarges images, GIFs and videos when the cursor is placed on the link with the image or the actual image. Before we talk about the extension, let’s take a look at some history. The Dark History: Hover Zoom + is thus the open source malware-free version of HoverZoom. HoverZoom was the first extension to introduce this concept to view images in an enlarged form. It became popular from the day it was uploaded to the Chrome Web Store. With more than 700,000 users, HoverZoom ruled the webshop. Until out of greed, the developer posted a script to replace ad links with its own partner code and started stealing user data as well. Well, every evil must come to an end. And here the source itself put an end to evil. The developer has removed the extension from the web store. Read the full story here. Don’t worry about Hover Zoom +. It’s clean and blooms every day. It is also open source. Now let’s see what it has for us.

Zoom in on images and GIFs

Hover Zoom ONLY enlarges the image with an anchor link pointing to the image URL. When you move the cursor over an image and the cursor turns into a hand, that image has an anchor link around it. So the script actually uses that anchor link to show you the full view of the image. You cannot zoom in on images on Guiding Tech because our images do not have an anchor link pointing to the image URL. So after you install the extension, the script will start its action. However, you will need to reload the web pages to try it out on the initial installation. It supports most web services.

Not only images, but even links pointing to an image are enlarged. There are specific plugins for every website that supports it. You can choose to always display high-resolution images. It also affects GIF images.

Handy shortcuts

Another great feature are shortcuts that can be used when the image is enlarged. Also known as Action Keys, these shortcuts allow you to save images, open image in a new tab / window, activate full zoom and navigate the image gallery. Also in a situation where you are browsing Google images, Hover Zoom will keep activating the zoom when the cursor is on an image. But you don’t want to zoom in on all the images. So, in such cases, you can use the X action key to temporarily disable the hover zoom until the key is held.

Filter websites

Let’s say you have some websites where you don’t want Hover Zoom to work. So you can easily add them to the blacklist. Or else you can do the opposite. Easily whitelist the websites that Hover Zoom is enabled on.

Zoom videos

You can also enlarge MP4 and WebM videos. Although for these enlarged videos you don’t get options like play / stop / fast forward or action keys. Very useful when scrolling through video results on Google and YouTube.

Save history of zoomed in images and videos

If you go to the advanced options, you will be given the option to add viewed images / videos in Chrome history.

If you subscribe to super fast unlimited internet, you can choose to automatically preload zoomed in images for faster results.

Alternatives?

Imagus is a similar extension to Hover Zoom +. It can also enlarge images and videos. In Imagus, you get a lot more power by setting rules on how the extension should behave for specific websites. READ ALSO: How to Set default zoom levels for better readability in Chrome and Firefox
