Many times you need to use Google Docs to create rich documents and want to insert a flow chart or diagram into it. Typically, you create one in Paint 3D or similar software and then paste it into the document as an image. Now you can create such flowcharts or diagrams with Google Drawings and insert them directly into Google Docs. If you go for the latter, I’m sure you can create the flowchart in a pinch, but you may run into some issues while inserting your document. Well, there are two different ways you can go about it and that’s what I’ll be talking about in this article. How to Insert Google Drawings into Google Docs
Before adding a drawing, you need to create one in Google Docs.
Create your drawing in Google Docs
So you need to create your drawing directly in Google Docs as the first stage to eliminate import / export issues. That also eliminates the need to copy it from the other platform. To do this, follow these simple steps: Step 1: Click Insert on the top toolbar in your Google Doc.
Step 2: Move the cursor over the Drawings option to access the next drop-down menu.
Step 3: Click New in the menu to open up a new Google Drawings Canvas.
Step 4: Create your drawing and click Save and Close button in the upper right corner.
Your drawing should now be added to the document. If you want to change the dimensions of the drawing, you can do that by selecting it, moving the cursor to one of the corners, then clicking and dragging it to resize it.
When you select the drawing, you are also given the option to change how you want it to appear in your document. You can have it inline, wrap the text around it, or break the text for the drawing. Pretty simple right?
Copy and insert your drawing
If you’ve already created your artwork in Google Drawings, you’ll need to insert it into the document in a different way. To do this, follow these simple steps: Step 1: Click Insert on the top toolbar in your Google Doc.
Step 2: Move the cursor over the Drawings option to access the next drop-down menu.
Step 3: Then click From Drive in the menu.
Step 4: In the next pop-up, select the Google drawing you want to insert into your document and press Select.
Step 5: Choose whether to keep the drawing linked to the original or to unlink it.
Your drawing should now be added to the document. If you choose to keep the drawing linked, you can edit the original and easily update the drawing in your document with a single click.
Here’s How to do that: Step 1: Update the original drawing and wait for it to be saved to your Google Drive.
Step 2: Go to the document in Google Docs and select the drawing.
Step 3: Click on the new Update button in the top right corner of the drawing to include the changes just made.
Simple, right? Now if you want to unlink the original to avoid accidentally adding changes to the document, you can click the new link button in the top right corner, then select Unlink from the drop-down menu.
From the same menu you can also open the original drawing if you want to make further changes quickly by clicking Open source button
How to Insert Google Drawings into Google Slides (Bonus Tip
So if you also create a presentation with Google Slides and want to include the same drawing in it, you will find that you cannot do that with the methods mentioned above. To do this, you need to follow these steps instead: Step 1: Click File on the top toolbar in your Google drawing.
Step 2: Select the ‘Publish to the web’ option from the drop-down menu.
Step 3: In the next pop-up, select the desired image size, and then click Publish button
Step 4: Click OK in the next prompt to publish your drawing to the Internet.
Step 5: Copy the newly generated link from the popupup
Step 6: Now switch to your presentation in Google Slides and click Insert in the top toolbar.
Step 7: Move the cursor over the Image option and select By URL from the drop-down menu.
Step 8: Paste the URL you just copied into the space provided and click Insert.
Your Google Drawings image should now appear on the slide. You can then resize the image in the same way as in Google Docs.
