This is really great news. WhatsApp has simplified the payment system by including UPI or Unified Payment Interface in its client for Indian users. Now sending and receiving money is as easy as sending a message on WhatsApp. However, you must have this first feature and set it up up WhatsApp started this feature sometime last week using the beta app, although the chatter for this feature is now quite old. How to Set up WhatsApp payments
Even before we get to the point where you set UPI on your WhatsApp, make sure you have the latest version of the app. The new payments feature is only available on WhatsApp Messenger version 2.18.48. Currently we have downloaded this in the beta version.
This is where it gets a little tricky. Even if you have the latest version, you wouldn’t see the payment option in your WhatsApp. To make this possible, request someone who already has this feature enabled on their account to initiate a money transfer. Post that, the feature will show up on your phone also.
After enabling the option, follow the step below to get your phone with WhatsApp payments. Note: For this feature to work, you must have a working UPI account or ID. Step 1: Open WhatsApp and navigate to settings. Select Settings from the given options to continue.
Step 2: Select Payments from the following list of options. Here you have to set up your UPI account and link it to WhatsApp.
Step 3: The next screen will ask you to enter your phone number, tap ACCEPT AND CONTINUE to continue. On the next screen, verify your number and tap VERIFY VIA SMS if everything is correct. This will open up the UPI interface from which you can link your existing account to WhatsApp.
Note: Since UPI is a protected app, no one can take screenshots and therefore we cannot show you how the money transfer is done.
What is UPI
UPI or Unified Payment Interface is a payment system that allows money to be transferred between any two bank accounts using a smartphone. Think of it as a unique payment email ID that’s safe and free to use. For UPI, an account number /mobile number and some sort of code were required to make money transfers.
You don’t have to remember IFSC codes or even account numbers to transfer money with UPI. UPI relies on @ -addresses that are easy to remember and are not tied to any particular bank’s app. You can link more than one UPI address to the same bank account. A user can easily use a UPI app to transfer any amount using their contact list. How to Send money via WhatsApp
After going through the initial setup, sending money via WhatsApp is really easy. It’s like sending a text message. Here’s how to do it. Step 1: Select the person you want to send money to. Open the existing chat or a new chat. Select the paperclip icon at the bottom of the screen and tap the Pay option.
Step 2: Enter the desired amount you want to send. To test we transferred Re 1 with WhatsApp Payments. Once the money has been sent, you will receive a text notification along with two blue check marks if the user has enabled that.

WhatsApp Payments is a brilliant feature, however, it is only limited to the user in India as UPI requires Aadhaar authentication to work. To replicate this for other countries, WhatsApp can continue with PayPal or even use cryptocurrency for this. Because WhatsApp already has the resources to do it and it also supports end-to-end encryption. At this point, we can only guess how this feature will come to other countries.
