Guide: The Chronological Order of Marvel Movies

First, let’s start with a disclaimer: it’s hard to work out the exact chronological order of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or MCU for short). Really difficult. Why you might ask?

“It’s an imperfect world, but it’s the only one we have.”

First, the MCU was not planned in exacting detail from the start. It started off gently: At the end of the first Iron Man movie, Tony Stark has just announced to the world that he is Iron Man. If he gets home that night we got our first glimpse of a bigger world of superheroes, when SHIELD director Nick Fury appears at Tony’s house. Since this scene, and the next up At the end of The Incredible Hulk, where Tony Stark briefly talks to General Ross about a new team in the making, the shared world has only grown. However, problems began to creep in as more directors and screenwriters became involved.

“There is nothing more comforting than realizing that the world is crazier than you.”

Considering that there are now 22 movies and 11 TV shows in Marvel’s mega franchise, and that it came into being on a bit of a piecemeal basis, it’s actually quite impressive that it makes as much sense as it does. According to Jon Watts, director of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel has an impressively large timeline in the form of a scroll longer than a conference table. This incredible artifact of geekdom has never seen the light of day, but it presumably covers the history of the MCU from the dawn of time, plotting every major event that has taken place, on screen or on screen. You would think this would help to avoid inconsistencies in the timeline, but unfortunately it is not. The clearest example is from Spider-Man: Homecoming, where a title card incorrectly states that the film takes place about 8 years after The Avengers. Fans were quick to point out that this conflicted with Avengers’ supposed setting.

“Nothing is beyond my head. My reflexes are too fast. I would catch it. “

The fans’ obsession with trying to figure out the correct chronological order was enough to elicit a reaction from the architect of what is now called ‘The Infinity Saga’. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios and a producer of every MCU movie to date, promised Marvel would release an official timeline to make things clear up. It didn’t. It made it even more complicated for fans to work together. Iron Man, for example, was originally said to have taken place in 2008, the year it was released. Then fan theorists found evidence that it had taken place. According to Marvel’s official timeline, released in January, it’s taking place. The official timeline was clear up one thing, revealing that despite what the movie itself said, Spider-Man took place just four years after The Avengers, not eight. This is actually quite strange because before the timeline was released, Kevin Feige insisted that the eight-year timeline was correct. If even the supervisor isn’t sure what’s going on, how can we ever know for sure?

“I Still Believe in Heroes.”

The official version also causes other wrinkles elsewhere in the timeline. The events of Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, and Thor apparently all take place over approximately seven days, a period known as Fury’s Big Week. This intense week for the director of SHIELD was pushed back a year from the original estimates (although The Incredible Hulk was not posted in the official timeline, previous information from Marvel puts it in this time frame). Despite all these issues, or perhaps because of that, fans have worked all the harder to produce a definitive chronological order for the Marvel movies. According to our research, this is the closest thing to the truth of it, at least until the ramifications of Endgame’s time-traveling pranks are revealed in the course of the next films.

“I hope they remember you.”

And so, without further ado, here’s our best attempt at putting the MCU movies in chronological order. It’s a combination of fan research and the official Marvel timeline, so it’s worth taking it with a grain of salt. And here we are! After all that, it almost makes sense. That said, the chronological order isn’t necessarily the correct order to watch it. Captain Marvel, for example, is much more satisfying to look at with the context of the entire series to make the revelations more meaningful. Do you think our timeline is wrong?
